The Prix Pictet Earth Commission by Ed Kashi will be presented at the Diemar/Noble Photography Gallery in central London.

The Prix Pictet Commission is an annual invitation for a photographer, chosen from the Prix Pictet shortlist, to produce a portfolio of images by visiting a region where Pictet & Cie is supporting a sustainability programme related to the theme of the award. For 2009, Pictet contributed to the work that Azafady, a UK charity and Malagasy-registered NGO, which is carrying out in Madagascar. Madagascar has suffered severe environmental degradation but still retains some of the highest biodiversity anywhere in the world. Azafady’s aim is to enable the poorest communities in Madagascar to develop sustainable ways of living and to increase local access to health care and education.

Ed Kashi was awarded the Earth Commission to visit Madagascar with the Azafady team in order to produce a series of photographs to highlight many of the issues that Azafady are focusing on in this unique and endangered environment. Ed travelled to Madagascar in January and shot over 8000 images, a small selection of which will be chosen and printed for the Commission publication and exhibition.

The Diemar/Noble Photography Gallery is situated in London’s West End and specialises in stocking and exhibiting photographic work from the medium’s early masters to current and cutting-edge contemporary work. The photographs that Ed Kashi took for this year’s Prix Pictet Commission were on show at the Diemar/Noble Photography Gallery in central London from 20 April – 1 May 2010. Ed Kashi also gave a talk about his work and practice, in an event chaired by Financial Times photography critic Francis Hodgson.

The exhibition opening was attended by nearly 500 people, including Prix Pictet artists, judges, nominators, critics and advisers and was met with considerable critical acclaim.
