Joseph Gergel is an independent curator and writer based in Lagos, Nigeria. For the last two years, he served as a curator at the African Artists’ Foundation, a non-profit organization for contemporary art in Lagos, as well as co-curator for the LagosPhoto Festival. During his time at the African Artists’ Foundation, he helped implement new projects including Art Base Africa, an online database and journal for contemporary African art, and YECA (Youth Empowerment Through Contemporary Art), which provides visual arts classes for youth in public secondary schools in Lagos. He has written texts on contemporary art for publications including Art South Africa, Omenka Magazine, DIS Magazine, Geurnica, Interventions Journal, and ThisDay Nigeria. Gergel obtained a Master’s Degree in Modern Art: Critical and Curatorial Studies from Columbia University in New York, and my B.A. from the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University.
