Artist's statement
For Moments Before the Flood, Carl De Keyzer aims to travel for seven months in Europe, going around the coastline from England, Iceland to Poland and Scandinavia, aiming only to capture landscapes and water.
An occasional human presence might also occur. His images contain a certain uneasiness that could be interpreted as a sign of upcoming catastrophe: if some predictions come true, the world’s water level could rise 3 - 5 metres, which would have devastating effects on the European coastline. It’s also an attempt (possibly fictitious) to preserve, for the last time, the beauty of this coastline. As always in Carl De Keyzer’s work, there is a link with the history of painting. This time it is the Dutch marine landscapes that caught his attention.

Carl De Keyzer is a freelance photographer. He is the co-founder of XYZ-Photography Gallery and is a member of Magnum photo agency. De Keyzer has exhibited his work regularly in European galleries and is the recipient of numerous awards including Grand Prix Triennale de la Ville de Fribourg (Fribourg 1988); the Prix du Livre (Arles 1990); the Eugene Smith Award (New York 1990), and the Prix de la Critique – Kodak (Paris 1992). He has lectured in numerous universities and arts schools worldwide. He has published eight books: Oogspanning (1984), India (1987), Homo Sovieticus/USSR-1989 – CCCP (1989), God, Inc. (1992), East of Eden (1996), EVROPA (2000), ZONA (2003), and Trinity (2008).
